DAL vs MIA ScoutingDAL vs MIA Scouting
Welcome to the scouting desk. The coffee is cold, the film is play-by-play, and somebody has to explain what happened.
Every game has a hinge — a stretch where it was decided, usually while everyone was watching something else. Start where the evidence lives: the Lineups' face-offs say which five actually won their minutes; the Possessions ledger says who ran ahead of the night's own pace; the Shot Chart says where the points really came from, which is rarely where the highlights were. When all three agree, that is the story. When they don't — that is why this desk has a chair.

I Know — the desk, before tip-off
Written before tip-off, from the five games each side brought in.
Dallas comes in 2-3 over its last five, scoring 112 a night and allowing 114, shooting 45 percent and 37 from three, 19 free throws a game; Washington at 21 and Flagg at 19 a game. It has lost the glass by 6 a night. Without Washington (2 straight), Gafford (2 straight). One day's rest. Miami comes in 4-1 over its last five, scoring 123 a night and allowing 117, shooting 49 percent and 38 from three, 25 free throws a game; Powell at 25 and Herro at 25 a game. One day's rest.
So: Miami wins, on the road, and the game turns on the glass, where Miami has been plus-3 a night and Dallas minus-6 and the line, where Miami takes 25 free throws a game to Dallas's 19. Call it Miami 118, Dallas 116, Dallas keeping it close.
11/24 @ MIA 102-106 — DAL notes
DAL lost 102-106. DAL shot 39% (38 of 97) to MIA's 45%, 12 of 40 from three, and got to the line 16 times to MIA's 24. Washington led with 27 (10 of 21, 3 of 8 from three); Christie added 15, Thompson 13. Q4 was theirs, 30-26, the deficit cut from 8 to 4, but the other 3 periods went 80-72 against them.
11/28 @ LAL 119-129 — DAL notes
DAL lost 119-129. DAL took 15 more shots (91 to 76), fed by 14 offensive rebounds, but shot 48% to LAL's 59%, 14 of 32 from three, and got to the line 20 times to LAL's 26. Washington led with 22 (9 of 19, 2 of 4 from three); Nembhard added 17, Marshall 16. Q2 was theirs, 40-32, turning a 6-point deficit into a 2-point lead, but the other 3 periods went 97-79 against them. Christie's -18 in 27 minutes was the worst on the floor.
11/29 @ LAC 114-110 — DAL notes
DAL won 114-110. DAL shot 44% (40 of 90) to LAC's 46%, 11 of 39 from three. DAL turned it over 8 times to LAC's 18. Flagg led with 35 (13 of 22, 0 of 3 from three, 9 of 11 at the line); Thompson added 23, Marshall 18. The hinge was Q3, 34-27: DAL came in trailing by 7 and left it level. DAL trailed 49-56 at the half and won the second half 65-54. Williams was the night's best plus/minus at +17.
12/01 @ DEN 131-121 — DAL notes
DAL won 131-121. DAL shot 56% (53 of 95) to DEN's 47%, 16 of 31 from three. Davis led with 32 (13 of 23, 2 of 4 from three); Nembhard added 28, Flagg 24. The hinge was Q2, 42-27: DAL came in trailing by 14 and left it ahead by 1. Flagg was the night's best plus/minus at +13.
12/03 vs MIA 118-108 — DAL notes
DAL won 118-108. DAL shot 51% (46 of 91) to MIA's 40%, 16 of 32 from three, and got to the line 12 times to MIA's 18. Flagg led with 22 (9 of 13); Marshall added 18, Davis 17. 12/05 @ OKC — I Know, the desk before tip-off
Written before tip-off, from the five games each side brought in.
OKC comes in 5-0 over its last five, scoring 121 a night and allowing 109, shooting 51 percent and 40 from three, and living at the line: 29 free throws a game, Gilgeous-Alexander alone taking 9 to 17 of them while averaging 35.6. The wins came every which way, a 39-18 first quarter against Portland, a fourth-quarter comeback at Portland, a 31-18 second at Golden State, which is the mark of a team that does not need one particular quarter to go right. Dallas comes in hot in its own way: three straight wins, 131 at Denver on 56 percent shooting, Davis back and scoring (32, then 17), Flagg carrying real minutes (35, 24, 22), and a habit of owning the second quarter, 42-27 at Denver and 36-21 against Miami, both turning deficits into leads. The soft spots: Dallas gets to the line 18 times a game to OKC's 29, allows 115, and shot 39 percent on 97 attempts in its last loss.
So: OKC wins, and the game turns on two things. The second quarter is Dallas's. Expect them within a possession or ahead at the half if Davis and Flagg get the ball inside and the threes fall at their 40 percent clip. Then the free-throw line decides it. OKC's edge there has been ten attempts a game, and Gilgeous-Alexander against a defense that allowed 24 and 26 free throws in its two recent losses is the worst matchup on the floor for Dallas. Call it OKC 122, Dallas 112, the Thunder pulling away in the third, Gilgeous-Alexander over 30 with double-digit free throws, and the glass (OKC lost it 51-37 to Phoenix) the only way Dallas keeps it inside five.
12/06 vs HOU — I Know, the desk before tip-off

Cooper Flagg and the Mavs extend their 1st winning streak to 3 with win over Heat
DALLAS -- — Cooper Flagg scored 22 points, Anthony Davis had 17 points and 17 rebounds and the Dallas Mavericks extended their first winning streak of the season to three games with a 118-108 victory over the Miami Heat on Wednesday night.
Undrafted rookie Ryan Nembhard had 15 points and a season-high 13 assists after scoring a career-high 28 points in the previous game, a 131-121 victory over Denver. Klay Thompson scored 17 points in his relatively new role off the bench.
Kel’el Ware had 22 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, while Tyler Herro scored 20 points but was shut out after halftime in his fifth game of the season coming off surgery to repair an issue affecting his left ankle and foot.
The Heat played without leading scorer Norman Powell , who has a sprained left ankle. Dallas center Daniel Gafford exited in the second half with a left ankle injury and didn't return.
Flagg, the rookie No. 1 overall pick, and Davis combined to score the last eight Dallas points after the Heat had cut a 17-point second-half deficit to four with three minutes remaining on a bucket by Bam Adebayo , who scored 21 points.
Davis was playing consecutive games for the first time since missing a month with a left calf strain.
Nembhard, who has made four consecutive starts that are the first of his career, made all three of his 3-point attempts during a three-minute stretch in the second quarter when Dallas took the lead for good. The Mavericks were 16 of 32 from long range.
Herro was 8 of 12 from the field in the first half but missed the only five shots he got after the break, four from beyond the arc.
